These are called <em>sva-dharma<\/em>, literally &#8220;own duties.&#8221; They are regulated by the system of four<em> varnas<\/em> (social classes) and four <em>ashrams<\/em> (stages of life).<\/p>\n<p>The ideal <em>varnasrama<\/em> system is discussed here. Below we list the main duties of each of the four <em>varnas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Shudras (Artisans and Workers)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-square wp-image-1113\" src=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna1-180x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna1-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna1-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna1-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna1-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna1.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>The <em>shudras<\/em> are the only section of society allowed to accept another&#8217;s employment; other <em>varnas<\/em> are occupationally and financially self-sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>To render service to others.<br \/>\nTo take pride in their work and to be loyal.<br \/>\nTo follow general moral principles, (e.g. not to steal).<br \/>\nTo marry (the only compulsory rite of passage).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Vaishyas (Farmers, Merchants, and Business People)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-square wp-image-1114\" src=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna2-180x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna2-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna2-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna2-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna2-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna2.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>The <em>vaishyas<\/em> are the productive class. They and the two varnas below are called twice-born, indicating that they accept the sacred thread (symbolising spiritual initiation) and must perform certain rituals and rites of passage.<\/p>\n<p>To protect animals (especially cows), and the land.<br \/>\nTo create wealth and prosperity.<br \/>\nTo maintain workers with abundant food, clothes, etc.<br \/>\nTo trade ethically.<br \/>\nTo give taxes to the kshatriyas (ruling class).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Kshatriyas (Warriors, Police, and Administrators)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-square wp-image-1115\" src=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna3-180x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna3-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna3-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna3-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna3-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna3.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>The <em>kshatriyas<\/em> are the nobility, the protectors of society. Though permitted a number of privileges, they are expected to display considerable strength of body and character.<\/p>\n<p>To protect the citizens from harm, especially women, children, cows, <em>brahmanas<\/em>, and the elderly.<br \/>\nTo ensure that the citizens perform their prescribed duties and advance spiritually.<br \/>\nTo be the first into battle and never to flee the battlefield.<br \/>\nTo be true to their royal word.<br \/>\nTo never refuse a challenge.<br \/>\nTo develop noble qualities such as power, chivalry, and generosity.<br \/>\nTo levy taxes (from the vaishyas only) and to never accept charity under any circumstances.<br \/>\nTo take counsel, especially from the<em> brahmanas<\/em>.<br \/>\nTo know the scriptures, especially the <em>artha-shastras<\/em>.<br \/>\nTo deal uncompromisingly with crime and lawlessness.<br \/>\nTo take responsibility for shortcomings in their kingdom.<br \/>\nTo conquer their own minds and senses and to enjoy only according to scriptural injunction.<br \/>\nTo beget an heir.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Brahmanas (Priests, Teachers, and Intellectuals)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-square wp-image-1116\" src=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna4-180x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna4-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna4-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna4-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna4-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/varna4.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>The <em>brahmanas<\/em> provide education and spiritual leadership. They determine the vision and values of any society. Traditionally their basic needs were fulfilled so that they could dedicate themselves to their spiritual tasks.They are expected to live very frugally.<\/p>\n<p>To study and teach the Vedas.<br \/>\nTo perform sacrifice and religious ceremonies, and teach others how to perform such rituals.<br \/>\nTo accept alms and also give in charity.<br \/>\nTo offer guidance, especially to the <em>kshatriyas.<\/em><br \/>\nTo provide medical care and general advice free of charge.<br \/>\nTo know Brahman (spirit, the self, God).<br \/>\nTo never accept paid employment.<br \/>\nTo develop all ideal qualities, especially honesty, integrity, cleanliness, purity, austerity, knowledge and wisdom.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Scriptural Passages<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;It is better to perform one&#8217;s prescribed duties, even though faulty, than another&#8217;s duties. What is the principle behind this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Common Misunderstandings<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The system of four<em> varnas<\/em> was a man-made structure based on one group exploiting others<\/strong><br \/>\nHindu scholars contend that the original system was based on co-operation, mutual service to God, and commensurate rights and responsibilities. For example, although the warriors had great wealth and power, they were expected to be first into battle. The learned,<em> brahmana<\/em> class were given even greater respect but were required to have full control over mind and senses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dharma is considered the ultimate say in moral issues<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is true, but needs careful understanding. <em>Dharma<\/em> is to be applied with consideration (See Common Misunderstandings, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/concepts\/core-values\/values-in-practice\/\">Values in Practice<\/a> section).The whole<em> Mahabharata<\/em> explores the nuances of <em>dharma<\/em>, and how difficult it can be to determine what is right action.
