Also called Adi Shankaracharya.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Advaita\">Advaita<\/a> &#8211; non-dualism, the name of the theology equating the soul with God.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Advaitin\">Advaitin<\/a> &#8211; a follower of the advaita school of thought founded by Adi-Shankara.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Agamas\">Agamas<\/a> &#8211; a generic name for sectarian literature, particularly the 28 Shaiva Agamas.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Aghori\">Aghori<\/a> &#8211; a group of ascetics whose deliberate practice is to contravene social and moral norms.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Agni\">Agni<\/a> &#8211; the god of fire, particularly prominent in the Vedic period.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Ahalya\">Ahalya<\/a> &#8211; wife of the sage Gautama, and one of the &#8220;five virtuous women.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Ahimsa\">Ahimsa<\/a> &#8211; non-violence, a key Hindu principle.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Akhand Bharat\">Akhand Bharat<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;undivided India&#8221;: a term used in championing the re-unification of India.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Akka Mahadevi\">Akka Mahadevi<\/a> &#8211; famous medieval woman saint from South India.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Allahabad\">Allahabad<\/a> &#8211; the Muslim name for the city of Prayaga, the site of the main Kumbha Mela.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Alvars\">Alvars<\/a> &#8211; the South Indian Vaishnava poet-saints of the early medieval period. He heard the Bhagavad-gita from Krishna.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Artha\">Artha<\/a> &#8211; economic development, one of the four aims of life.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Artha Shastra\">Artha Shastra<\/a> &#8211; texts that discuss how to acquire wealth and power; considered related to the Dharma Shastras.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Arti\">Arti<\/a> &#8211; the most popular Hindu ceremony, in which a lamp and other articles are offered.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Arya Samaj\">Arya Samaj<\/a> &#8211; one of the main 19th century reform movements, still extant today.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Aryan\">Aryan<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;noble&#8221;: traditionally refers to any people, irrespective of race, who have a culture based on spiritual values.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Ashok\">Ashok, King<\/a> &#8211; monarch who patronised Buddhism; under his influence it spread throughout much of India.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Ashrama\">Ashrama<\/a> &#8211; a place where spirituality is cultivated; also, stage of life (of which there are four).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Ashvattama\">Ashvattama<\/a> &#8211; son of Drona, martial teacher of the five Pandavas; he notoriously slaughtered their sleeping sons.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=AstangaYoga\">AstangaYoga<\/a> &#8211; the eightfold path that culminated in meditation and samadhi (trance). One of the four paths.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Astika\">Astika<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;orthodox&#8221;: refers to the six darshans. Non-orthodox schools are called nastika.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Asuras\">Asuras<\/a> &#8211; the demons. Materially elevated but impious beings, constantly at loggerheads with the gods.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Atharva\">Atharva<\/a> &#8211; the fourth of the four Vedas.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Atithi\">Atithi<\/a> &#8211; literally &#8220;without any time&#8221;; the unexpected guest.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Atman\">Atman<\/a> &#8211; literally &#8220;self&#8221;: it can mean body or mind, but ultimately refers to the soul.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Atri\">Atri<\/a> &#8211; one of seven great rishis (sages), each of whom have a gotra (dynasty) from which Hindus claim descent.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Avadhi\">Avadhi<\/a> &#8211; popular language for vernacular texts, especially in the area of North India around Ayodhya.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Ayodhya\">Ayodhya<\/a> &#8211; the capital city of Koshala, the kingdom of Rama.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Ayurveda\">Ayurveda<\/a> &#8211; the indigenous science of Indian medicine; the texts which explain this science.<\/p>\n<h3>B<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Badanarayana\">Badanarayana<\/a> &#8211; a name for Vyasa, attributed with writing key texts such as the Mahabharata and Vedanta Sutras.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Badrinatha\">Badrinatha<\/a> &#8211; a holy spot in the Himalayas. One of the four dhamas (especially holy places).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Baladeva\">Baladeva<\/a> &#8211; key theologian for Bengali Vaishnavism; his commentary on the Vedanta Sutra is the Govinda Bhasya.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Basava\">Basava<\/a> &#8211; influential reformer within the Lingayat tradition of South Indian Shaivism.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Benares\">Benares<\/a> &#8211; another name for Varanasi, perhaps the most famous of all Indian holy towns.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhagavad-gita\">Bhagavad-gita<\/a> &#8211; the Song of God, spoken by Krishna to Arjuna.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhagavad katha\">Bhagavad katha<\/a> &#8211; the public recitation of the Bhagavat Purana, often over seven days.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhagavat Purana\">Bhagavat Purana<\/a> &#8211; one of the most popular Puranas, containing the famous stories of Krishna.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhajan\">Bhajan<\/a> &#8211; a hymn, from the root &#8220;bhaj,&#8221; to worship with adoration.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhakti\">Bhakti<\/a> &#8211; the path of loving devotional service (also Bhakti-Yoga).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhakti-Yoga\">Bhakti-Yoga<\/a> &#8211; the path of loving devotional service; also called bhakti marg.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhaktivedanta\">Bhaktivedanta<\/a> &#8211; name of the founder of ISKCON. It means &#8220;bhakti is the conclusion of all knowledge.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhangra\">Bhangra<\/a> &#8211; an energetic dance style from the Punjab.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bharadvaja\">Bharadvaja<\/a> &#8211; one of the seven great rishis (sages) of ancient times.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bharata\">Bharata<\/a> &#8211; the ancient name for India, called after the king of the same name.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bharata Muni\">Bharata Muni<\/a> &#8211; author of musical texts delineating nine rasas (tastes) upon which much music is based.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bharata Natyam\">Bharata Natyam<\/a> &#8211; the name of the most popular Southern Indian style of classical dance.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhava\">Bhava<\/a> &#8211; emotion. A word used in the classical performing arts and also in much bhakti theology.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bhrigu\">Bhrigu<\/a> &#8211; one of the seven great sages. According to some texts, he tested the trimurti to see who was the Supreme.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Bindi\">Bindi<\/a> &#8211; dot, usually of a red colour, traditionally worn by married women on the forehead.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Birbal\">Birbal<\/a> &#8211; the witty minister of Emperor Akbar; many legends have developed around his exploits.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Blavatski\">Blavatski, Helena<\/a> &#8211; Russian lady who co-founded the Theosophical Society.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brahma\">Brahma<\/a> &#8211; the creator (or, some say, secondary creator); one of the trimurti, three main deities in this world.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brahma Sutra\">Brahma Sutra<\/a> &#8211; another name for the Vedanta Sutra.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brahmachari\">Brahmachari<\/a> &#8211; a celibate student. A member of the first stage of life (called the brahmachari ashrama).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brahman\">Brahman<\/a> &#8211; the Supreme or spirit; that which pervades and supports everything.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brahmanas\">Brahmanas<\/a> &#8211; one of the four main divisions in the Vedas themselves.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brahmana\">Brahmana<\/a> &#8211; a member of the highest varna; a priest, teacher or intellectual.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brahmo Samaj\">Brahmo Samaj<\/a> &#8211; the reform movement started by Rama Mohan Roy.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Brighu Muni\">Brighu Muni<\/a> &#8211; one of the seven ancient sages (rishis).<\/p>\n<h3>C<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Chaddar\">Chaddar<\/a> &#8211; a cotton or woollen shawl worn by men and women.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Chaitanya\">Chaitanya<\/a> &#8211; the founder of Bengali Vaishnavism; one of the medieval saints.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Chakra\">Chakra<\/a> &#8211; the disk weapon usually associated with Vishnu, and one of his four symbols.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Chanakya\">Chanakya<\/a> &#8211; a brahmana, advisor to King Chandragupta, who wrote on statecraft and popular wisdom.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Chandra\">Chandra<\/a> &#8211; the Moon; the presiding deity of the Moon. Also known as Soma.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Chappati\">Chappati<\/a> &#8211; a round unleavened bread toasted on a skillet and then puffed over an open flame.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Charaka Samhitas\">Charaka Samhitas<\/a> &#8211; one of the texts explaining the science of Ayurveda.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Charanamrita\">Charanamrita<\/a> &#8211; the water collected from the feet of the murti after bathing, and later sipped by worshippers.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Charvaka\">Charvaka<\/a> &#8211; scholar who proposed that the purpose of life is to obtain ghee (i.e. good food by any means) and enjoy.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Chidambaram\">Chidambaram<\/a> &#8211; a Shaivite pilgrimage town, the state of Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<h3>D<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Daksha\">Daksha<\/a> &#8211; one of the chief progenitors; father of Sati, Shiva&#8217;s wife, who killed herself by self-invoked mystic fire.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dalit\">Dalit<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;the oppressed&#8221;; a title assumed by the class previously called &#8220;untouchables.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Damayanti\">Damayanti<\/a> &#8211; wife of Nala and one of the famous women of Hinduism.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Danda\">Danda<\/a> &#8211; staff, particularly as carried by the sannyasi.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dandiya rasa\">Dandiya rasa<\/a> &#8211; a Gujarati stick dance popular in the UK at Navaratri.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Darshan\">Darshan<\/a> &#8211; literally &#8220;seeing&#8221;; the act of taking audience of the deity or a holy person.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dasa Kuta\">Dasa Kuta<\/a> &#8211; a Vaishnava tradition centred around Pandapur in Maharastra.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dasanam\">Dasanam<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;ten names&#8221;; the ten orders of sannyasa founded by Adi Shankara.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dasharatha\">Dasharatha<\/a> &#8211; the father of Rama.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dayananda Sarasvati\">Dayananda Sarasvati<\/a> &#8211; founder of the Arya Samaj.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Deva\">Deva<\/a> &#8211; god; sometimes translated demigod. God is often called Deva-deva, &#8220;gods of gods.&#8221; Devi means &#8220;goddess.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Devanagari\">Devanagari<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;used in the cities of the demigods&#8221;; it refers to the Sanskrit script.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Devi\">Devi<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;goddess&#8221;; used to refer to any female deity, but most specifically Shakti, wife of Shiva.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Devi Bhagavat Purana\">Devi Bhagavat Purana<\/a> &#8211; perhaps the second most popular Purana; it includes the stories of Shakti.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Devi Purana\">Devi Purana<\/a> &#8211; another Purana dealing largely with the Goddess.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dhanvantari\">Dhanvantari<\/a> &#8211; incarnation of Vishnu who appeared out of the Milk Ocean and gave humankind the science of medicine.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dharma\">Dharma<\/a> &#8211; the religious duties that sustain humans and all living beings.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dharma Shastra\">Dharma Shastra<\/a> &#8211; the law-books of Hinduism dealing with morality and the judiciary.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dhoti\">Dhoti<\/a> &#8211; a piece of cloth about four-metres long and worn by Hindu men to cover the loins and legs.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Dhritarashtra\">Dhritarashtra<\/a> &#8211; blind brother of King Pandu; his bias towards his own sons fostered the Kurukshetra conflict.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Diwali\">Diwali<\/a> &#8211; the festival of lights (October\/November). Vows are also taken at initiation.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Vrindavana\">Vrindavana<\/a> &#8211; an important holy town close to Mathura and the place of Krishna&#8217;s childhood and youth.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Vyasa\">Vyasa<\/a> &#8211; also called Badarayana; an important sage credited with writing many important texts.<\/p>\n<h3>Y<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Yajna\">Yajna<\/a> &#8211; ritual sacrifice, prevalent during the Vedic age but still performed today especially through the havan.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Yajnavalkya\">Yajnavalkya<\/a> &#8211; sage and author of some important texts which form part of the Dharma Shastra.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Yajur Veda\">Yajur Veda<\/a> &#8211; one of the four Vedas.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/?s=Yama\">Yama<\/a> &#8211; the deity in charge of death and the awarding of punishment to the sinful.
