Since values are subtle, and exhibited largely through behaviour, most texts explore them thematically, through topical issues.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_778\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-778\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-778\" src=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/values1-248x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The relationship between concepts, values, and practices, all informed by authority.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, it is useful to study Hindu values systematically, and it is particularly rewarding to examine how they inter-relate with concepts and practices (as shown to the right). According to Hindu thought, the dynamics between these three items include the following;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Concepts significantly inform values (see<a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/concepts\/core-values\/values-and-concepts\/\"> Values and Concepts<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Values are demonstrated through practices (see <a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/concepts\/core-values\/values-in-practice\/\">Values in Practice<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Nurturing suitable values, through practice of morality and spiritual discipline, is necessary to assimilate knowledge.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>With this emphasis on realisation of knowledge, the tradition considers the religious life as a system of education. Important to this process is the role of authority, in the form of texts and teachers (see <a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/concepts\/key-concepts\/scripture-and-guru\/\">Scripture and Guru<\/a>). As scripture clearly discusses all three items \u2013 concepts, values, and practices (see <a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/tradition\/doctrine-and-scripture\/hindu-sacred-books\/\">Sacred Books<\/a>) \u2013 the guru is considered indispensable in explaining scripture, modelling exemplary behaviour, and providing hands-on guidance. Crucial to the whole process, to appropriately respond to life, is the role of conscience, the guru within (see <a href=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/concepts\/key-concepts\/god-perceived-in-three-ways\/\">God: Perceived in Three Ways<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Although Hinduism is an accommodating tradition, its values are not entirely fluid. They may not be constrained by a single or static set of beliefs, but they are guided by the need to comply with universal principles, and the desire to discern truth from illusion (<em>maya<\/em>). In exploring this topic, therefore, it is useful to recognise that Hinduism has its own distinctive perspectives, as we list below:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_781\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-781\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-781\" src=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/values2-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/values2-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/iskconeducationalservices.org\/HoH\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/values2.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two important authorities \u2013 spiritual (the <em>brahmana<\/em>) and social (the <em>kshatriya<\/em>) \u2013 who should work co-operatively.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Values are closely connected to the execution of dharma in terms of specified duties, both spiritual and socio-religious.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sanatana-dharma<\/em> supports the ideal of shared values, the spiritual virtues that are recognised by all authoritative religious traditions. These characteristics are considered to be inherent within the heart of all beings, and to be invoked from within rather than imposed from outside.<\/p>\n<p><em>Varnashrama-dharma<\/em> allocates different specific values to the respective <em>varnas<\/em> and <em>ashrams<\/em>, often as stepping-stones towards ideal character (represented by <em>brahmanas<\/em> and <em>sannyasis<\/em>).Values are often transmitted through story, illustrating the dynamics between knowledge, character, and the ability to execute dharma and respond to situations.<\/p>\n<p>Hindu values may differ from those currently prevalent in the UK. They often challenge &#8220;political correctness,&#8221; and may even differ from those taught within schools.
